Under the new law, beginning August 20, 2020 District of Columbia employers must implement social distancing and worker protection policies consistent with the Mayor’s July 22, 2020 mask order (“Wearing of Masks in the District of Columbia to Prevent the Spread of COVID-19”).  Businesses that are open to the public must post signs on their exterior doors stating “people not wearing a mask may not enter” and exclude or attempt to eject from the premises people who are not wearing masks or who remove their required masks. Also, employers must provide masks to their employees.  The new law also prohibits employers from retaliating against employees because the employee: (1) tests positive for or is quarantining because of COVID-19; (2) is caring for someone who has symptoms of or is quarantining because of COVID-19; (3) attempts to exercise any right under the act; or (4) acts to prevent a violation of the act.
