The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that the exemption for the physical inspection of form I-9 documents is extended to August 19th, 2020. This exemption does not apply to employers that have employees physically present at a work location.  Under the exemption, employers must complete the remote inspection of approved documents within three (3) business days of the employee’s hire date and enter ‘Remote Inspection Completed on ___(date).  Within three (3) days of when normal operations resume, all employees who were onboarded using remote verification must present their approved documents for a physical inspection. Employers should add “Covid-19, documents physically examined with the date of inspection” to the I-9 forms.  An example of a completed I-9 form is below:
